How does bladeless Lasik work?

Bladeless Lasik or IntraLASIK is an eye surgery performed to correct your eyes’ refractive errors. This refractive surgery is done by using an excimer laser to create a corneal flap. After the flap is created, it is folded back to allow the reshaping of the cornea. The Bladeless LASIK technology makes millions of small perforations in the cornea to create the flap. Bladeless LASIK uses more complex and expensive laser systems when compared to the traditional LASIK that is partially done manually with a metal blade. Bladeless LASIK is one of the latest technology in correction the refractive errors of the eyes and it has shown to improve the vision of the patient while keeping errors to a minimum.

Bladeless Lasik allows the doctor to have greater control over the surgical procedure and quickens the time it takes from beginning to its end. In bladeless Lasik, a thin corneal flap is made in front of the cornea. After creating the corneal flap, it is folded back and the corneal tissue underneath is reshaped using a second laser in a precise way to correct the refractive errors such as farsightedness, shortsightedness and astigmatism. After reshaping the cornea, the corneal flap will be replaced to protect the reshaped cornea.

Several LASIK technologies are used for creating blade-free Lasik corneal flap. Dr. William Boothe of Boothe Eyecare recommends using the most advanced bladeless Lasik method, the iFS Intralase Laser which includes a high-resolution digital video microscope. According to clinical studies, bladeless Lasik procedures provide excellent results with minimal risk. Bladeless procedure are safer and more precise than traditional Lasik procedures done using the microkeratome blade. For example, while doing the procedure, if the laser is detached from the eyes during the lasering process, it will automatically get reattached and will continue the surgery. Involuntary movements of the pupil are compensated for in real time, ensuring that every millisecond that the laser operates on your eyes hits the corrects spots as set up by Dr. William Boothe prior to surgery.

Corneal flap related complications can be avoided using the Bladeless Lasik eye procedure. Patients report that the bladeless Lasik procedure is more comfortable for than the traditional Lasik. Most of the patients who undergo the bladeless procedure experience no complications or side effects after the surgical procedure. Bladeless Lasik is a delicate lower-energy procedure and for this reason, it can be used even in patients with thin corneas. People with thin corneas usually cannot undergo other kinds of Laser surgeries. Dr. William Boothe is an expert in performing bladeless Lasik and he will check whether the patient is eligible for the Lasik surgery or not.
