With the help of Dr. William Boothe, the scholarship has awarded more than $470,000 to deserving students who demonstrate outstanding examples of leadership, integrity, academics and community service. Event participants of the winning football team are eligible to receive the scholarship, including football players, student managers, student trainers, band members, cheerleaders and field performers. This year the team of Boothe Eye Care and other corporate sponsors were proud to award the scholarship to Emily Giffin, Will Johnson and Scott Lopano of the Southlake Carroll Dragons.
The scholarship works in conjunction with the Tom Landry Classic, one of the largest competitions in high school football. In 2009, the Southlake Carroll Dragons won the competition with more than 22,500 spectators in attendance.
The Tom Landry Classic has been held in Dallas for several years and, on August, 29, 2009, celebrated its tenth anniversary. The high school football competition is in honor of famed Dallas Cowboys Coach, Tom Landry, who led the NFL team for more than 29 seasons. He was also the inventor of the famous “4-3 Defense,” a highly successful defensive football play.
